Previously, a pub, 193 Hackney St it nowadays features Sagar + Wilde – a sleek wine bar with an excellent menu. The establishment is now more like a Parisian corner bar than a traditional pub and – behind the long iron-grate bar sits Sager & Wilde's main selling point – its wines – served at a reasonable price by the bottle or glass, and varying day to day. The food is amazing and the quantities generous we challenge you to finish everything. The waiters are friendly and you won't be chased away quickly as the place fills up. Mostly wines are from every part of France but there are fair share of wonderful wines from all around the world, Austria, Italy, U.S etc. Worth a visit!
Hackney was originally a small Hamlet and The name Hackney derives from a 5th or 6th century Saxon settlement known as Haca's ey – or raised ground in marshland. The settlement was near Hackney Brook, on higher ground near to the later built, 13th Century, St Augustine's Tower - which still survives as the oldest building in Hackney. The village is not mentioned by name in the Norman Domesday Book and, at that time, it formed a part of the manor of Stepney.
