This Greenwich awning, installed recently on the Groucho Club in Dean Street, Soho, marks the entrance to this famous private venue. A neat, grey, powder coated aluminium front profile to the Greenwich awning contrasts with traditional black arms and the beautiful natural stain and varnish treatment to the awning box. The Greenwich awning box itself is constructed from the finest hardwood sourced by Morco's purchasing department from a reputable timber supplier who only imports hardwood from recognised, licensed, harvested sources.
The Groucho Club, located in Dean Street, Soho, is an arts & media, private members club, created in the 1980’s by a group of, mostly women, publishers as an antidote to the many existing gentlemen’s clubs. Membership is drawn from those working in publishing, film, music and advertising. The club opened 5 May 1985. its name was in reference to Groucho Marx's telegram saying he didn't want to be a member of any club that would have him as a member.
Dean Street was built in the 1680s and Admiral Nelson stayed in a property here just before he set sail for the Battle of Trafalgar. He spent most of the night drawing up his final plans for the battle, much of it in creating the novel idea of painting gold and black checks on the ships to make them identifiable in the heat of battle. Legend has it that he spent the some of the evening at a nearby undertakers choosing the coffin he would buried were he not to be favoured by good fortune in the encounter. As has become legend, this was prophetic for one of our nation's greatest heroes when he was fatally wounded at the very moment of victory.
