SQ2 recessed awnings for the new BBC Centre

SQ2 awnings were specified for installation at the new BBC centre in White City as they are the only awning system in the world designed to disappear entirely into a shopfront when retracted, every architects dream.’  All other awnings that claim to be recess fitted still protrude from a fascia when closed. If its not an SQ2, it’s still in view. The superior strength of the SQ2 awning is ideal for commercial situations as, when retracted, a flat fascia panel is all that is visible from the outside. Further, as previously stated the SQ2 is unique among commercial awnings in that it can be recessed completely into a shop front facia without the unsightly protruberances of other similar awnings. The original project design reflected a single concept but, as each individual retail unit was to contain a different tenant, variation was to be achieved through the use of different shades on each separate unit.The framework on this job was powder-coated to a client specified RAL and wireless motorisation was included so that each individual awning could be controlled separately.

A cultural icon and landmark piece of modern architecture, the BBC Television Centre was opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth ll in 1961 as the centre for television programming and a focus for cultural creativity.  After 55 years it was felt time for a further redevelopment of the site which now incorporates Television Centre’s famous forecourt which has been transformed with new private gardens created for residents. The Crescent is a collection of new apartments encircling The Helios, with individual balconies or terraces overlooking private grounds or Hammersmith Park.

The units to which the awnings are installed will accommodate retail establishments and a number  of eateries and independent local cafés.
